Copyrights, Quilters and Authors, Oh My!

I know that I am on my "Spring-Break" this week, but I wanted to share this post. I subscribe to Gen Q blog post via my Google reader. It is a very interesting read. As quilters we love fabrics, lots of fabrics. Over the last several months there has been a major controversy and discussion about copyright infringement from a fabric designer and a book author. If you make, sell, photograph or otherwise use a designers fabric this may affect you.

In addition, the whole pinterest bru-ha-ha has given me much to think about this week. Anyway, here is the link to the article and it has links included from the designer and the author so that you can get the full picture. It is confusing, contradictory and rather depressing. Is nothing safe anymore?

Gratuity Moment: no one has filed a lawsuit against me because I failed to mention that I used a 6 inch piece of their fabric in the binding of a quilt I made 5 years ago, phew!
Like the burl knots on this tree, it is a contorted and lumpy subject. See you next week.

Thanks for this post! I totally agree with you.

It's the old story: when money's involved...
And envy, I think.

Have a wonderful weekend.
Cheers!

Actually, the more I think about this the more frustrated I am. While no one contests this designers copyright, how far does this go? I am glad that the publisher is taking the front on this and being more cognizant of the copyright laws but also working with the designers and authors to clarify the issues.

Bottom line, someone started the process. These attorneys did not go after the author on their own. The designer had to have driven that process. Like many who commented on her blog, sorry, but I will not purchase your fabrics or designs for fear of a repeat performance. Litigation scares me!
