Let Us Civilize Our Community

Choices (*I have no idea where this photo came from, it was in my archives, thank you to whomever so eloquently captured my mindset today)
I wasn't planning to post anything today, but after reading my email, I thought I would just mention a subject that is getting more and more play on the blogs. To me, this drainpipe photo illustrates this dilemma. The single downspout symbolizes the common blogging experience, and how comments can affect your posting.  The comments can be supportive and constructive, questioning and challenging or downright rude and vulgar.

For whatever reason, some people make very rude and vicious comments on blogs. I would suspect they are having a bad day and need to vent or they are just miserable, unkind people. I would prefer the first excuse. Either of these is not acceptable. This is a kind and sharing community. Those who have business sites deal with other issues as well, but common courtesy needs to be re-addressed.

In a recent post, Kathy Southern, who owns StudioKat Designs, illustrates this problem from her perspective.    Read here if your care to:

Most of us have a moderated comment function and can delete objectionable posts. In the meantime, please mention on your site that only proper and non-vulgar comments are acceptable. If someone with much more talent than I, could come up with a symbolic logo button that we could use, I would be thrilled. This would identify that our blog supports a movement of civility in blogging. Anyone interested?

I don't understand why people make ugly comments. What is the point? Most of us don't even know each other. And if we don't like someone's blog, then don't read it. Simple. The old saying, "if you can't say something nice, say nothing at all" applies to blogging as well.

So true. There are a few very talented bloggers that I quit reading because they pepper every post with some sort of vulgarity or ageism and yes, I am insulted. So I gave up on them. Poor children, life will eventually teach them lessons. Perhaps then they will realize how civility promotes a cause, any cause.
