Welcome Summer Sewists, Discard Minimalism and Enjoy!

 Minimalism is Dead!

I read this on a sign the other day, how you interpret it depends on your view of life, how you spend your time, and most certainly how you view the future via the post-pandemic lens.

While our lives remain under the specter of the pandemic, there are many ways to savor the season if you quilt, sew, knit, or cross stitch or not!

  • Our gardens, other gardens, public gardens are nearing their peak blooms. What a perfect opportunity to study color, consider design possibilities, and work on our sketching. I am trying (really trying) to learn shadow sketching and the abundance of flowers and greenery is the perfect backdrop.

  • Lets decorate our porches for our stay-at-home vacations. Add some pillows and a quilt to your chair, cover that little table with a patriotic mat. The opportunities are endless for the stitcher.

  • If you sew, you know, the price of linen garments are skyrocketing. I have a lovely piece or two that need a purpose. I find that air conditioning is chilling. I like to wrap up after a shower or just when lounging in the evening while I read. I will be mining the stash for a simple wrap robe. I have a few patterns that are a decade or two old, uncut. This is an easy project for anyone with a sewing machine or a serger. I made one like this, don't have a photo, it is in quilting cotton, not linen.
  • Another interesting linen project, a simple sewn wrap. With a piece of linen, edges frayed, a nice little cover can be made in an afternoon, kept in the car for those days when the restaurant is below zero. At least now we can dine out occasionally, make it special, dress up a bit, grab that wrap and go!I will post this tutorial tomorrow.
  • Pop some flowers into little vases all over your house. Pick a bloom or two or stop by the market for a bundle. I went to a lovely dinner over the weekend hosted by dear son and his lovely girl friend. She made a stunning center piece of white lily and ferns. The scent was light and fresh. • Don't forget to support your local Farmers Markets. The early fresh vege define Summer. A stroll through the stalls and tables will bring great entertainment and support local merchants.
  • And last, touch base with yourself. Find some new books, even a genre you have not yet explored. Take some time, on the porch, with a nice cup of tea and relax, listen to birdsong, and be thankful that we do not have to live a simplistic life. Enjoy all the elements your life has to offer.     people walking on walkway during daytime
