November 1, 2020-A Day of Rest

What an interesting day in Western Pennsylvania! Sunshine alternating with dark clouds, driving rain, high winds, and gloom. A good day to cuddle up with a cup of tea and a little reading material.

A village in Wales, charming, picturesque, calm.

The week ahead is another busy one so I decided to take a day just to read, write and enjoy the little critters that have hitch-hiked on my houseplants brought in from the porches. Darn, I leave them out as long as possible hoping the cold weather will take care of most of them but there are always a few that make it in.

This year I have made a difficult decision about two plants. One is a tropical tree, another a giant lilly. Both will go to their reward. They are huge, they are poisonous, the little furry person here loves to pull off leaves. Just not worth the risk. So, to the giant compost pile in the sky. There are personal connections to these two, last year I couldn't do it, this year I can.

My reading today left me with an impression that many, if not most of the women I know, are getting very weary of the virus confinements. Not just the day-to-day reports we hear, but the sense that we are in a constant holding pattern. Waiting for life to begin again, waiting for 2020 to go away, waiting to reboot our social lives. With the holidays coming, adjustments will be made. This little tome was a nice perspective against the current times.

Across the globe, women are embracing their entrepreneurial spirits and starting creative businesses. In the Company of Women profiles over 100 of these influential and creative women from all ages, races, backgrounds and industries, including well-known names like Sibella Court and Tavi Gevinson. Chock-full of practical, inspirational advice for those looking to forge their own paths, these interviews detail the keys to success (for example, going with your gut; maintaining meaningful and lasting relationships), highlight the importance of everyday rituals (meditating; creating a daily to-do list) and dispense advice for the next generation of women entrepreneurs and makers (stay true to what you believe in; have patience). The book is rounded out with hundreds of lush, original photographs of the women in their work spaces.

Speaking of adjustments, I have had to make another concession. Because the painters are so busy, my kitchen re-do will start after Thanksgiving, not be done before Thanksgiving. I am trying to be a good customer about the whole thing but it is a disappointment. You know what I mean?

I finally found the recipe for the Pistachio cake like MIL used to make. I have tweaked a couple to come up with it. I was so glad when husband and son gave me the thumbs up! I have not been able to find my copy of that recipe, I think I lent it to a former family member. Never found MIL's either. There were literally hundreds and hundreds of recipes in her home. Boxes and boxes, tucked in every book, in every drawer, it was quite a challenge to sort through all that stuff. She didn't really cook much in her last several decades. She was a baker, she did like her cookies and cakes! I will share it soon with pics, soon out of the pan, it disappeared. Son took all but two pieces. He was happy.

  • This is a difficult week for many, may you be content in knowing you are not alone.

  • It's going to be a comfort food week, I can tell. If you haven't yet here is a link to my favorite food blog. I have tested so many of the recipes here, I cannot even choose one favorite. The Cafe Sucre Farine. (thanks Terri!) Meet Scott and Chris!
  • There are several new comfort food recipes as well as great quick breads and some new ideas for holiday gifting.
