Sewtopia Examines Tablescapes and the Linens

Happy Flag Day in the USA!

Ah, Summer is just around the corner!
In these days where we have been limited on our dining out experiences, why not bling out your every day table to make our in-home dining experiences more elegant, more memorable.
No matter what dishware you prefer, from elegant bone china to stoneware or even melamine, you can provide an atmosphere that gives a simple home cooked meal a nice touch that can make each day special.
Always a proponent of the elegant table, Sharon Santoni is an advocate of the dining experience rather than a rush and run meal. The French table is set differently than the traditional English or American table. Read about her style HERE, on her blog My French Country Home.
There is a movement among young ladies in these troubled days to bring simplicity and comfort to their homes. It has been labeled, Granny Chic. I have recently read several articles that explain how these ambitious ladies define their conversion from the hustle, bustle of days before quarantine to a more focused and structured home where family is the center of life.  From sit-down meal times to teaching their children to sew and craft, these charming young women are changing their routines. Interestingly, many of the Grannies are returning to their roots where the family and home life is the focus of their lives as well.
Making Pretty every day, Elise Dumas, Paris, photographer.  Interview in My French Country Home, HERE!

I have always "set" a table. Does anyone really notice? I do. If you have been reading this blog for any length of time, you already know that I cook, a lot, and I am passionate about teapots, tea cups, dinnerware, etc. Let's explore some basics.

  • Use the good stuff. Don't wait for a special occasion to bring out the pretty china and quality flatware. Make today a special occasion.
  • Table coverings; table cloths, placemat's, table runners all set the stage for the event. Even if you are grilling burgers, a nice little covering, maybe in checks, adds a flair to a humble repast.
  • Napkins are essential. Fine linens, stitched up quilt fabrics, repurposed kitchen towels all add to balance the table. I will even stretch to pretty paper napkins. Husband uses three or four at a time. My solution was to buy pretty ones but I am still working on him.
  • Flowers; any table, anywhere, any bloom will elevate the experience. One of my favorite casual settings include fresh basil stems with a few wild daisies on the kitchen table. Formal arrangements are stunning. I cannot afford them on a regular basis but the grocery flower stands offer really nice bundles at a reasonable price.
  • Candles are formal and great for special occasions but I do keep them on the dining room table for times, like early evening if the room is darkening, for atmosphere.
