How Do You Use Your Quilts?

How do you use your quilts? Of course, a bed is always the perfect spot but what else can we do with them. I drape them over chairs, rocking chairs, on tables etc. I am always looking for a way to make use of them.

A resurgence of patterns are showing up online and in periodicals featuring table runners, or little quilted pieces to use as mats or dining table decor. I think that after many of us have made many quilts we look for smaller projects to remain creative, to use up stash, to gift.
A table runner for the picnic table, done, needs to be quilted and bound. This is the Moda Grandma's Cottage jelly roll that was an orphan of sorts. It has been in the stash for years, needed a purpose, will soon have one!

Many years ago, probably 25 or 30 years actually, my passion was Victorian/Edwardian style and the photo's that I studied in books, magazines, etc. showed many different types of needlework. Crazy quilts, yo-yo quilts, embroideries all were used for decor. Thus, this little quilt was born, another one, gifted to a friend was in blues. It has no backing, just yo-yo's stitched together. It was a great take-along project.

A Yo-Yo quilt, well throw I guess, converted to a decor item by hanging it from a wrought iron decorative bar. There is not much room above the headboard on this bed. The piece actually hangs below about 2 feet. For now, it works. As soon as Mr. Levin reopens the stores this bed is going, going, gone. It is huge!
Creating a comfortable environment is the dream of every quilter. Popping color and fabric contrast here and there always reminds me of a week with grandparents! What a grand time that was. At that time the blankets and quilts were utility pieces, not decorative items. On chilly Summer evenings, the cousins and I would pluck the quilts from the foot of the bed and tumble down the long staircase, out to the front porch and onto the swing or cuddled up in one of the wicker chairs.  With crickets as background music, we would talk about everything from getting new school clothes to the boy next door! We had a special view of the world there, US 40, the first East-West highway ran right in front of the house. A historic little village, Scenery Hill was our Summer destination.
This is a photo that reminds me of that house, I have no real pictures from that time. The overstuffed furniture, oriental carpets, a wee bit of clutter here and there, and a large red leather chair in the corner that was Grandfather's only.  This one is a movie set actually. This and many other beautiful photos that evoke an English Country Style of decor can be viewed HERE on The Simply Luxurious Living Blog.

Post-quarantine Lola, her second birthday marred by a severe hair cut because her curls were interlocking and matted. It had been almost 3 months since grooming and she normally goes every 4 weeks. Days later, she is still quite peeved at us for putting her through that.
