1954, Miss America Competition, Ironing competition. I was 6 years old in 1954. My mother ironed everything. I mean everything. It was a badge of honor to be well pressed! I remember, around that time our neighbor got one of those new-fangled clothes dryers. Well, she just folded the clothes when they came out, they were not ironed. Let me tell you, she was the talk of the neighborhood. When my older son went to middle school he wanted to shop for all his own new school clothes. OK. He brought home some really nice stuff. Several shirts, however, had these crinkle-wrinkles in the fabric that took me forever to iron out. Starch, press, starch, press................he was furious. They were supposed to be wrinkled. It was a "new" thing. My mother's teachings were fully ingrained! In this state of isolation, I have relaxed my standards. Today I put on a turtleneck jersey and didn't iron it! I am going to burn for that one! As of the time I am writing this, social distancing seems to be the number one way to limit the spread of the virus. A projection I just read stated that between March 29 and April 10 Pennsylvania will reach our peak in the curve. If you have to go out do it now. If you have a mask, wear it. If you have gloves, wear them. Discard them and sanitize outside of your car, seal the bag, dispose properly at home. What ever you touch is possibly infected. Disinfect and sanitize. We will get through this but it is going to be hard. After Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday the odds of infection increase if you are in public. I am just now starting to feel a type of shock, I cannot believe this is happening. I have worked around infectious disease my entire career. I live in fear for those doing it now. This is different, this is worse, this one is a killer. If you have any immune compromise issue be extra careful. We will see our children and grandchildren again, when this is over but I just read a projection that it might be between June 2nd and 22nd for our area. It is March 23. That is over three months. Can we do it? We have no choice. |
