I am a reader, I read at home, in waiting rooms, any moment leisure time presents. You know how long it takes water to boil for your Tuesday Pasta? Long enough to read a few pages for sure. Sometimes I listen to audiobooks so I can keep my hands free.
I want to share a recent read that touched me profoundly. In the medical field, we are often exposed to information that resurfaces when you least expect. In biochem class, I remember reading about HeLa cells. This book is the story of Henrietta Lacks. A young woman who developed cervical cancer in the 1950s. Treatment seems primitive to me now. Knowing the story behind the cell plates under my microscope now, I am speechless. I had no idea. The tragedy of the woman, her family, the research arm of famous institutions as well as those who benefitted greatly from her illness has given me great insight into a world that was totally foreign to me.
Not to dwell only on the negatives of this true story one must remember the phenomenal benefits society all over the world has received as a result of her cells. Cancer cures, vaccines for so many illnesses, advancements in medication in treatment just to name a few.
So, thank you Dear Henrietta Lacks. You have opened my eyes. We are never too old to learn. *available on Amazon.
Find a nice quilt to cuddle under and read a book today!
This quilt is a cuddler for my MIL. She is also a reader but sadly retains absolutely nothing of what she reads. This quilt was on her recliner on Friday when she was handing out candy to the trick or treaters that visited the nursing home.
