My last "Comforts of Home" post is one that has occurred over a number of years. Today I am sharing Collections. It started innocently enough with a trip to Ontario. We had our first vacation in many years and Niagra Falls was a destination of interest for the entire family. On our way home we stopped at Fort Erie. As history buffs it was a nice excursion. They had a little gift shop. They had tea pots. The rest is history. From that moment on for every Birthday and Holiday my dear ones gifted me with tea pots and tea cups.
Soon after I started studying the history of American Bespoke Pottery. I traveled to several studios and the rest is History. Teapots, crocks, bean pots, canisters, little decorative items, as well as lamps and soup tureens.
Most recently, perhaps the last 10 years, the collection has embraced Polish Pottery. Same subject, different translation. Husband is of Polish origin so that one was an easy transition.
Now I am out of room. Really. It is difficult, I will admit because there are so many items that I have yet to collect. But....that's it. Unless I move to a larger house I have to put the brakes on it or give some away. Not ready to do that yet.
These things provide comfort for me. They are memories, they are beautiful, they are useful for making my home a Home. And that is what this is all about. The people who live here and come here know that there are NO velvet ropes...we live in this house. We use everything, the good linens, the good dishes, the good stemware etc. If one cannot use the best with self and loved ones, why have the collections if they are only collecting dust? Not me. On my tombstone we will add (ps, I already have my stone and it is installed, I like to plan ahead!) She Used Her Stuff!
- Have you considered what you consider to be the elements of your home comforts?
- Of course, we are all different but probably more alike in many ways that one might think.
- Quilts, little stitching projects, books, Tea and tea rituals and collections-that is my 5.
