More Attic Quilts-A Summer Quilt

The Attic Quilts range from well used and fraying to never used. It is interesting to see how the ladies, (Grandmother and her Daughter) skills changed over time. All are special to me, of course, but I am amazed when I think about how many quilts they made over time. None of them are labeled, mostly not fancy or special but a "picture" of how they lived.

This pattern was popular with them I have 4 other quilts much like it. Each star has 8 points, this was hand pieced and hand quilted. There are two different shades of a turquoise blue alternating with white blocks. The centers are brown, some of the blocks brown centers have faded.
This quilt was washed many times and line dried. They did not use a dryer. There is no fraying but there is some distortion on the blocks after washing.
This is a Summer quilt. There is no batting. It appears to have been pieced, large muslin backing layered with right sides together, stitched all around leaving a turning opening of about 10 inches. Then the opening was closed and a hand stitched tacking all around the edge, there is no binding. Then it was quilted.
It is a charming quilt, made for a full size bed. Here it just covers the top of the bed.
Another interesting feature is this muslin tape applied to the back side while the edges were being stitched all around.

  • I suspect it was made during the 1950's by the colors. The backing is a printed muslin, one piece.
  • It has held up very well considering it has been in storage for 70 years!
  • And yes, it smells of vinegar!
