My version of a bright star, (or the perfect snowflake) thank you Rose. |
Much like a bright star in the night sky, I use my creative pursuits to lift the blah's of any Season. I readily admit that I am a creature of the seasons. What I do, what I cook, what I sew is often of a seasonal nature. I am fortunate to live in a geographic area that boasts four seasons, sometimes all four in one day! However, sometimes one season or another drags on a bit and I am anxious for the switch so I need to come up with activities, behaviors etc. that give me that incentive I need to maintain brainwaves. This week, a few little tips in a series will attempt to do just that.
Tip of the day...reboot your basics. In January, February and some of March our weather is downright miserable, cold, snowy, windy, rainy. My outside times are limited to walking the dog and running from one building to another. I have never been one to embrace the biting wind whipping my hair around and the thrill of the cold air up my sleeve. I like some sun at times as well. So I fake it.
Little lights. That's right. I turn on little lights in every nook and cranny on the floor where I happen to be working. It is cute, cozy, and heart warming in the dark and dreary days.
I set up little work stations. I have one large leather chair with a footstool that is perfect for evening crochet projects or little stitching items. Sometimes I am mending, sometimes I am reading, sometimes I am journaling. In any situtation I have the chair with a quilt on the back (because leather is so darn cold) I have a candle or a scent warmer going with a good light. I usually have a blanket of some sort to cover the legs and a nice hot cup of tea. More often than not a selection of music has been chosen for a quiet and restful time. Since I set up all my projects in a work basket or a tote, everything I need should be there and ready at a moments notice.
At this time of the year, I feel like this, a mushroom! Music. Recent studies from Scandanavia have clearly illustrated how music of any kind supports brain health. Yes, the musical structure of classical music is more of a benefit but the brain automatically follows melody and that assists in thought structure. Try it, you'll like it.
Clean Something. One little practice I follow most of the time is to clean a drawer, cupboard or something every day. Sometimes it just the little drawer where I store plastic utensils. Other times it is a larger cupboard. More often than not I can do this while cooking. Just one a day, that's all, don't get carried away. Eventually you'll be all ordered and organized.
My departed Mother was good at this, she would paint a wall, move the furniture, purge clean something. Today she will have been gone 4 years, hard to believe, seems like much longer. Hi Mum!
A reboot is sometimes all that I need to get going and a smile. I need to smile more.
