I spent many years as a case manager for a inpatient psychiatric hospital. I learned much during that time but there is so much more for health care professionals to learn. Recent statistics state that rates of suicide are up 25-30% in the last 20 years.
Please, please, please remember that depression is a disease. Actual study has proven physical changes that occur to those affected. The historical stigma of mental illness must be driven from our culture. It is NOT a weakness, it is NOT laziness, it is NOT a choice.
If you or someone you care for is showing any signs of depression, stay alert. It is not unusual for all of us in life's path to have moments of despair. Brief encounters of "the blues" are normal for most people.
I will not get clinical here but please remember that a conversation with a trusted friend, clergyman or physician can be the first step.
