She always liked sporting her neckerchiefs, it helped at night because I could then see her as we walked the yard. She was so black she disappeared!

Quilting Designs: Filling Patterns Design Ideas

So what is a quilter to do? I think that choosing a quilting design has turned into a quest of sorts. When reading Pathways to Better Quilting by Sally Terry, I was reminded of a set of panto-graph patterns that I purchased several years ago when I bought the original HandiQuilter frame system for a domestic machine. These simple, repetitive designs are the go-to for the home quilter. Of course, many long-arm quilters use such patterns as well. Finding the most appropriate pattern for a particular quilt requires a study of the pieced design. I think that a design with curves would work well for piecing that is essentially nothing but hard and straight lines. The first pattern, the clam shell, is much like that. I started marking the Jelly Roll Marathon Quilt with a stencil I had on hand but the shells are much too small. Still Thinking About Quick Quilts-The 9 Patch Scramble

so here we have your average mixed/scrappy 9 patch, assembled and cut on the bias angles, then you mix the triangles up, spin them around. Tool Time, New and a Review

*(this is not our machine, but it looked much like it) Doo-Dads, that's what my stitching ancestors called them. I remember when I first sat down at my Grandmother's Treadle machine, there were many little tools in the drawers, many just for maintenance. Screwdrivers, little screws, some attachments that were, quite honestly, a little frightening, and a spool of red thread. The rest is history. I never knew my mother's mother. She died of the Spanish flu epidemic in 1918. The machine had been passed around in the family for decades and it ended in our basement when I was nine years old. My sister has it now. So that leads me to current sewing helpers that make our lives a little easier in the pursuit of our sewing passions.
