The Little Things

It's the little things,  the special things, the tools of our trade so to speak. Our little favorite items that help each of us work on our projects and complete our quilts etc. I had a chance encounter recently with a lovely lady and our conversation turned to our needle-art passions. At 85 she had she had dabbled in garment making, quilting, and painting. She admitted recently that she had not been inspired to do much. Ironically, she added that she recently had attended the Three Rivers Quilt show and was inspired to pick up her needle again. It is a small world. Of course, I did not recognize her from the show, there were so many people, but I was  thrilled to hear her unsolicited impression of what she saw there

We talked about little things. Since the show she started making tiny yo-yo's.That reminded me of this litttle piece that Sew and Sew member Rose made in 2011. Little yo-yo's!
And this little tin, below, is one Rose brought last week. It contains her fabric, scissors, needles and thread that she needed to make itty-bitty hexi's. The tin is about 4 inches in diameter, maybe 5 inches. Too cute, great for travel.

 My favorite little things:
gingher
My Gingher thread snips, the very best I have ever used. Sharp, balanced, nice weight.
sewing kit
My Me-made wool sewing kit, everything I need for portable stitching.
hand made box
This wooden hand-made thread spool keeper is tucked under a portable ironing board. I also use it for sequencing embroidery threads for machine embroidery. Those slippery rayon threads un-spool when not corralled!
My (messy) work box. This one sits next to my main sewing machine. Lots of needed stuff.

thread
This one sits next to my Handi-Quilter Long arm, suspiciously neat?

sewing notions
This one sits atop a 4 drawer set of chests (IKEA) that I use as a staging area and a secondary cutting area. It is also a bit messy, a work or two in progress.

Now these little gems are available everywhere and if you cut fabric and use a ruler, well,  they are indispensable! No more  shifting while you cut with your trusty rotary cutter.

sticky gripper dots
On this 12 inch square ruler I have 8 of these little stickies. Work like a charm.
What are your favorite smalls?

My favourite smalls are definitely the yo-yos in all shapes.
And, ofcourse, my handy Zondagssteek design pincushion, where I can store so many of my tiny, handy tools :>)
Cheers,

Jeanneke.
