In the land of blog there are many rising stars. If you delve into it's little corners you will find young women who love to sew turning their blogs into amazing works of art and life. I found Gertie's Blog for Better Sewing. (visit by clicking on the link) about a year after she started. The premise was a lofty one, to sew all fourteen styles featured in the The Vogue New Book for Better Sewing, 1952. (currently selling for $298.88 on Amazon.com) She tracked the patterns down, one by one, online and in any way possible. She started this journey in July 2009. Since then we have all enjoyed learning with her about advanced sewing techniques. With a retro vision, Gretchen has now published her own book.
Tea time with Gertie's New Book for Better Sewing. I pre-ordered the book when Gretchen announced it a few months ago. It arrived about 2 weeks early. It is spiral bound for easy use. I like all my sewing books to lie flat for easy use in reference. I have been working on making infant hats on my loom and glanced through the book between projects.
This book comes with all its patterns in a separate envelope.
I have only had time to read the first section but it is well done, easy to read and well illustrated.
Look at how nicely it lies.
Great line diagrams.
There is lovely photography of finished projects. Many advanced techniques are illustrated and explained, some of that information is now only available in couture books. While my style does not lean to retro fashion, I do enjoy applying an occasional retro touch to personalize a piece. This is a landmark piece of work in my opinion simply because so many young Sewists embrace retro styling. Some focus on the 40's and 50's while others take licence to pick and choose elements to suit their personal style. In any case, there is something to learn here and I want to thank Gretchen for this book.
