A Crochet Memory for Memorial Day 2012

This post is ironically timely. In the process of down-sizing, my Mother gifted me with something very special. My parents did not marry until after the war. (WWII) These doilies were sent to Mothers, Girlfriends and Wives. She has held onto it all these years, after many, many moves, it has some damage, but it also has a wonderful story.
Stationed in England prior to the D-Day invasion, the soldiers and paratroopers trained for the battle to come. The kind ladies of that country, in an effort to show their gratuity, gathered up the torn silk parachutes. They cut them into strips and crocheted them into doilies for the soldiers to send home. The soldiers who ultimately faced a fierce enemy, many of whom did not make it home. Yes, this is one of those doilies. It is so soft after years and years of use.
the silk is in surprisingly good condition
I am not sure where it will go in a house full of memories and special collections. It will need to be sheltered from the sun and dust to avoid further deterioration. Just think of the symbolism.
