The Character of the Wood

While at the home show a couple weeks ago I came across an artist who had a large display of wooden bowls and baskets that he carved from Carolina Cyprus tree roots. Always one to enjoy the eclectic, I chose this one. I love the bumps and knots and holes and lumps. Husband just smiles. He knows better than to question or contradict when I am on the hunt for something different. This one spoke to me. I know, weird, but it did. It reminded me of life,  sometimes smooth and orderly and other times tortuous, full of holes and missteps. Uneven grain, odd shape....yes that is me. This view shows the rings, I tried to count them but gave up.

I like this view with the little bumps on the side, uneven grain, discolorations and that big knothole.  In all its glory sitting on the new Victory table cloth.
And yes, it is food-safe.It is carved from one piece of wood.

So for now, it is a fruit bowl. It is large, about 14 inches across and the handle stands about 12 inches high. I can see it holding yarn in balls during the fall "nesting season."

Gratuity Moment: my recent need to give symbolic meaning to inanimate objects. It is an exercise in sorting the sub-conscious,  giving it a tangible category, forging a new understanding of how my life has changed and evolved.

This bowl is beautiful...just like each one of us, it's beauty lies in its uniqueness.

I totally agree. My design sensibilities often lean to primitive and rustic. These pieces give discarded tree roots another life, and they were all beautiful. Hard to choose just one!
