Workshop: Sulky Thread Jazz for Quilting and Embellishing
Sue Selby Moats is a Sulky National Educator, longarm quilter & quilt artist and teacher. She specializes in fabric manipulation techniques and teaches how to work with many specialty threads such as: invisible, rayons and metallics(including Sliver). The various methods may be incorporated into wearable art, wall hangings or quilts. Sue was a teacher for 27 years before retiring to follow her love of quilting. She began quilting 14 years ago with an emphasis on garments and wall hangings using free motion techniques with specialty threads. Her work has been shown in regional as well as national quilt shows. She teaches Sulky Sew Exciting Seminars at fabric, quilt & sewing machine stores. In addition, she lectures and teaches at quilt guilds, national and regional consumer & quilt shows. Sue is willing to travel anywhere to share her love of quilting and to teach the use of special threads and manipulation techniques. Please contact her for more specific information regarding the lectures and workshops she offers.

So during the class we were given muslin, quilt batting and some top fabrics as well as many different types of stabilizers. Each top, batting, backing and stabilizer was secured with the KK2000. If you use this product you will find it really works well. However, remember to lay down paper and/or spray in a box because this stuff really sticks. It will dissipate in 3-5 days but in the meantime, you will have a sticky surface. And, of course, do not spray near any sewing machine. What I own is the original formula, there is now a hypo-allergenic type, with a green cap if you prefer.
There are now several companies who manufacture speciality threads and stabilizers, this class was sponsored by Sulky. I you want to know product specifics please just comment below.
Conclusion: Having taken a similar class several years ago I was anxious to see if any new applications had been developed for the threads or stabilizers. I find classes like this informative and inspiring. Sue Moats is a lovely lady with a great deal of information to impart. She provided multiple samples to illustrate her methods, her stitching is meticulous. It was very helpful for me to review thread painting techniques, I really have not done much of this. However, I think that I will try to do more of this on smaller quilts, wall hangings for example. The metallics and some of the specialty threads are really not appropriate for multiple laundering etc. I have not made any quilted garments for 15 years or so, but I may re-consider.
In closing, I want to add a shout out for Three Rivers Quilters for sponsoring such great programs this year. If you are fortunate to have a Quilt Guild near you, check out a membership. Many offer different classes and programming that may enhance you sewing passion.
I am in the process of sorting my samples and keeping a notebook with all the stitch and setting information to reduce my prep time for projects.
Gratuity Moment: for Fathers everywhere, those with us and those who have gone ahead. Happy Father's Day Dad.
