Book Review-Alterknits

Good morning. Hope you all had a good week and had time to enjoy some of the Wedding coverage, checking out clothes and those unbelievable hats. Not a hat girl myself, I was fascinated by the styles. How do they hold those things on?  My hat wardrobe consists of knitted or crocheted cloche things to keep me warm in cold weather. On that note, there are multiple possibilites of hat making with felting. I checked this book out of the library some time ago and thoroughly enjoyed studying its designs and beautiful photography. This is "Alterknits" (my underscore is wonky, sorry) by Leigh Radford. Published in 2008 it is full of great projects for the beginner and advanced felter. While these projects are designed using traditional hand felting techniques, many can be adapted, in part, for the machine felter.

These flowers are made by layering thin layers of wool over a core fabric, then cutting out the flower shape and adding bead embellishments. I can see these on hats, totes, children's jackets etc.

these are felted onto a hat and little seed beads are attached

this flower is a knitted flower and petals then shrunk by felting, cute!

slippers

tea cozy

pansy table runner, fantastic

cute little purse

little balls, some used as pin-cushions
The techniques are well explained and detailed photos enhance the teaching quality of the book. Great for beginners and more advanced felters as well, it is one of those books that will likely be added to my library.

On the cover,  a delightful little bowl of balls is calling to me. What a bright little embellishment to have on a table or windowsill. I will need to collect a lot of colors for that.  Later in May I have a local Yarn Shop Tour scheduled with DIL. Should be great fun. I am hoping for bags of assorted colors of roving for just this type of project.
