The "Modern" Style of Quilt

About a decade ago I remember hearing conversation at a quilt guild meeting about the "modern" style of quilts. There was resistance, quite a bit actually. A few years later a member from the local newly formed Modern Quilt Guild in our city came to a guild meeting and spoke about the movement, their goals and an invitation for us to join. A few members went to the first official meeting and while they appreciated the energy these talented young women were injecting into the quilting arena, they opted to remain traditional.
Karen understands the style, the colors, the dynamics. She has made several that would fall into the "Modern" category.

As a whole, I think much of my work and many others has evolved a bit. For me, in color. I am drawn to the light and bright, to the abstract designs and I like using those colors in traditional designs and patterns.

Karen (from The Ladies of the Cloth Group) said the name of this pattern is Thrown. If you look closely at the top photo you can see that it appears that the blocks were thrown onto a light background and most of them are concentrated at the far end of the quilt while the other end is mostly white. She added the musical notes border to emphasize the theme. The colors are very modern and when combined are truly cohesive even though one might not see that when looking at them uncut or unsewn.

  • I strongly feel that this movement has, in many ways, invigorated the quilt industry.
  • The trend has energized many new fabric designers and quilt designers as well.
  • Some people have been attracted to the art because of this movement.
  • Please remember to support your local quilt shops. In the past few years we have seen quite a few in the general area close. They have their own reasons, of course, but as a whole a great loss to the quilting community.
