March: Cheerfullness is much more to be desired than riches .
Those who possess it have something riches cannot buy-
a great possession because it creates goodwill
and makes for real happiness.
Mary Brooks Picken
Such an optimistic and hopeful statement by such a talented woman. As relevant now as then, the advice shared provides advice to help us live productive lives. In the March chapter words of wisdom are shared on how to have 'Honest Purpose' in our lives, "Roses Every Day' illustrates the benefits to self and others of a positive attitude and a helping hand. In 'Disguising Generous Proportions' Amy B. remarks that they receive many letters from women complaining that the magazines seem to show thin figures and neglect the woman of generous proportions. I hear my bell ringing....Next there is a charming segment about 'Bathing' and the virtues of cleanliness. If you can clear your calender in the afternoon or evening you will feel fit and relaxed. 'Meatless Meals' are given a generous chapter but my favorite is 'Monograms Make Linens Distinctive.' I am a fan of the Monogram, one of life's essential embellishments it can be simple or flourished. A hand-stitched and padded Monogram is elegant, a machine stitched Monogram is a favorite of the modern woman, particularly the sewist with an embroidery machine.
Some basic guidelines for Monogramming:
- mercerized cotton is most satisfactory-it works up evenly and smooth- specifics of size are included
- place monogram on the straight grain of the fabric
- proper placement is described for married and unmarried women
