The "Board Basting" Project

Step one after the unpinning and separation of the layers, a little more starch and a repress of the backing. Please remember that I had spray basted the layers as well as used 1000+ pins. I was careful not to destroy the batting.  I laid it out on a queen size bed, steam pressed and did the best I could. I am not loving the backing fabric I think.
The Boards.

So, onto the boards. Let me just say this worked great for me. My boards were left-overs from a remodeling project, cut 80 inches each, primed.  I thought that this size would suit most of my quilts. If the quilt is larger I would set up a super long folding banquet table that I have stored in the garage. The extra length of the table would work if any fabric hangs off the edge of the board. Did that make sense?
The Baste.

I followed the instructions on the video and had no problems at all. Using the herringbone stitch to baste, I felt like I was making a tailored jacket again. All in all I give this method 5 out of 5 stars. Thank you again Jeanneke for recommending this! Now onto the quilting. I haven't decided on a design yet, but since the quilt is so linear I am thinking a contrasting pattern.  I also plan to add some applique to this quilt. It is rather boring as it is and could use some trailing vines or something. The links below will take you to the two Sharon Shamber videos explaining the board basting technique.

This book has some interesting ideas. I'll review it on another post.

I watched the videos on board-basting. That is genius! I recall having terrible back-aches when basting quilts. Thank you for posting about this.

Hi Gwen, I actually stopped making large quilts because of the difficulty with basting! I have severe arthritis and the whole process was just too difficult. Now, "I'm back baby!" As Mr. Frank Costanza used to say when he started cooking again!!! (Seinfield)

And the lipstick, oh yes!

Great! I am so glad this is THE solution for you!
No need to ever worry again about basting XXXL quilts.
I am going to show and tell other quilters about board basting. It is surprising this method is still rather unknown.
But here I come :>)
Cheers!

Jeanneke.
