Ready for Downton, Granny's and Yarn, With a Pinch of Snark

Brew my tea, I am ready for some good Masterpiece Theater! If I watch one more "My First Place" or "Income Suite" or "Barefoot Contessa" I will need to scream. I think. I am hoping tonight's Downton's episode has a little more depth.

As I wallow in my misery and pneumonia, I have not had much oomph to sew. Husband is hovering like I'm dying, 95 year old Mother (who never calls because the telephone befuddles her) called last night, MIL is making chicken soup like the world is ending and my dear dogs are confused and examining me. Constantly. I hate being ill, I will rest for a little while, but as soon as the coast is clear, I'm at the machine! I had a "moment" last night and frogged the blanket I was making, just not me, colors were washed out, boring.  This one below. I had finished the lavender row, the off-golden row and started the first blue row. Just wasn't right. This was a simple pattern I found on Purl Bee and just had to change some things, wrong move. As soon as Hubs leaves the house I am down in my studio, gathering some white yarn to start my white-background granny squares. Yes I am.

Very popular with young crocheters, I have seen this pattern in several fabrications. Pillows, blankets, little sweaters for little people.  The white backgrounds, versus the black, provide a fresh contrast. Rather like this, but in white, not off-white. Into a pillow or two, not a blanket. Probably. Don't you just love someone who can make up her mind? Blame it on the fever.

Pinterest nBoard, all about Granny or this one, everything from blankets to bikini's!

What I find most interesting about visiting these boards and many like them is the trend of a certain younger population to embrace the vintage style of their Grandmother's. While another group of the same population shrieks at anything Granny. As evidenced in the multiple house hunts I have been watching on HGTV. They see wallpaper and cower, they see tufted back furniture and roll their bright little eyes or a kitchen that did not cost $80,000 they turn up their snotty little noses. (now remember, these little darlings are working at entry level jobs and are willing to accept the 30% down-payment from their parents while they anchor themselves to a  gargantuan mortgage) I have been watching way too much TV! So I am going to bond with the other group. The ones who search the flea markets for a Formica topped table or swoon over bark-cloth yardage.  They are ecstatic to find a collection of partially completed quilt blocks that they can complete, bless their little hearts.

Anyway, back to the Granny squares. Hubs just left, I am off to dig out the white yarn, some colored yarn and a hook. Wish me luck.

Actually feeling a little better today, could it be yarn therapy or a dose of Downton?
