Crazy Quilt DVD Seminar

Are you like me, collecting lots of books and DVD's that you will watch or study when you have time? Well, like it or not, today I have time. Some nasty little respiratory bug has taken up residence and rather than waste the day, I had my own little private seminar.

A three reference seminar, just for me

This DVD is worth the two hours

One of my favorite methods to review books is borrow them from friends or the library system, review them, then decide if I need them for my permanent collection. I borrowed this DVD  and these books from the library and really glad I did. Two hours of learning about the crazy quilt process via the DVD have really given me a direction.  I have been stalled for several reasons.   After reviewing several books, I was not sure if I wanted to approach the quilt as a block or a whole cloth piece. Whole cloth apparently tends to warp during construction. The trick is to make blocks and disguise the seam lines so that the piece looks like whole cloth.  Secondly, I have problems with color. I know what I like but quite honestly I have trouble putting it all together. The DVD by Judith Baker Montano, titled "Judith Baker Montano Teaches You Crazy Quilting" has opened my eyes. Trained as an artist and painter, she explains color theory better to my ear than I have heard before. Her color philosophy breaks down shade and tone, warm and cool colors and how to use a color wheel. It made sense to me. She explains her favorite tools, including the use of a glue stick. She has coined the title of her process as the Five Sided Montano Method. Through the DVD she takes you through the process of building a block, adding the embellishment and then the embroidery.

I also picked up a couple books at the library that clearly illustrate process and stitches.
I have studied this one before, but it makes more sense to me now after gaining a little better understanding of color theory and how to choose fabrics

"Crazy Quilting The Complete Guide" by J. Marsha Michler is a great little spiral bound book that emphasizes embellishment and stitches. I need a little more time with this one. Beautiful detail and line drawings of stitch patterns.

I feel more comfortable now and ready to get back to work on my little Crazy Quilt project. I need to gather more embellishment options, ribbon and lace. All in all a rather productive afternoon for a sick chick.
