The Cutting Bee

Well, since this was our first cutting event I think it turned out nicely. Our usual starting time is 10am. The church where we meet gave us the room for 5 hours. We had 12 people (an one absent but sent her fabrics by proxy.) We set up two cutting tables, each with a mat or two. Each member brought 6 fabrics, washed, ironed and pressed in the form of a fat quarter. We had decided that we wanted to cut 2 1/2 inch and 4 1/2 inch strips. To maximize our fabric we cut combinations of each to minimize waste.  For example, we were able to cut 7 2 1/2 inch strips per fat quarter, 3 4 1/2 inch strips and 1 2 1/2 inch strip, or any combination. We also had yardage of fabric that had a stripe pattern in varying widths, this was cut into long strips to use for cutting further or for borders.

One table under a large window that maximized the light.

The plastic basket on the right in the photo is for the few scraps we collected. One member, R. makes amazing things out of little pieces. That collection was just for her:)

Another table under a bright flourescent light. We  took turns cutting our fabric and some for those who chose not to cut. It was so interesting to see all the lovely fabrics everyone brought. We all frequent local and travel quilt shops and it was surprising that there were no duplicates, not a one.

While cutting we talked and worked on personal projects as usual. Then, ............

After all the fabric was cut we arranged them and ordered pizza, about 12 o'clock. After our lunch (with cookies too) we chose our fabrics. We chose 10 fabrics each on the first round, 5 on the second and subsequent rounds until most of the fabric was gone. What little remained I keep for the "traveling bag." This is a simple shopping bag where we store left over fabrics or pieces anyone wishes to donate. You know how something looks great then you get it home and it is all wrong? Well, maybe for you but not someone else. Anyone in the group can ask to take the bag for a week. You can take from it or add to it. It makes good use of left over fabric and provides an opportunity to pass it on. We did this on our Fall/Halloween projects and it worked quite well. After cleaning up our space we wrapped up about 1:30 pm. We accomplished quite a bit. We are all anxious to see how our quilts are designed and completed. I will keep you posted.

Gratuity Moment: the day P. asked me to join this group. Thank you!
