A recent discussion on the Threads Insider podcast discussed notions and items we all use to organize our spaces. While these three ladies primarily are garment sewists, their ideas can translate to any stitching medium.

All in all I garnered 14 ideas, some known, some not, that were interesting. A few not discussed on this blog if my memory is correct, so here we go.

  • One that I have heard before but never tried are the small terrycloth pony tail holders wrapped onto a bobbin to secure loose threads. The small one fit just right and cover the entire inner ring. This I will try, if and when I can ever get to a store to find them or order on Amazon.
  • How do you store your elastics? In the discussion one of the ladies lamented how her thin elastic used for making facemasks became tangled and knotted. She and her daughter were churning out many masks and just pulling off the hank what they needed. It quickly became a mess. So, after completing a roll of plastic wrap she took the inner tube, which is pretty sturdy, wrapped the elastic around the tube and bingo, nice and neat.
  • Painters Tape, have you ever tried it? I keep a roll nearby all the time. I use it to put a marking line on my machine bed when I have trouble seeing the markings. You can also mark the right side of fabrics etc. because it does not leave a residue.
  • A project board from a cork board. One of the ladies irons her patterns, puts them here. She includes the envelope, notions, etc. all in once place to streamline her work. Like this.

Other items we have mentioned in the past: magnetic bowls for pin storage, an office-type lazy susan on your sewing table for tools, pattern weights from metal washers wrapped with fabric scraps or bias tape, a carry caddy for portable work while hemming etc, Vintage luggage for fabric storage and mason jars for smalls such as buttons, snaps, etc.
