The Comforts of Home-#2, Little Hand Stitching Projects

My most recent finish is this Reproduction Civil War Era Pincushion, It is wool stuffed with walnut shells. Very easy to make but I did piddly-dink around with the finish. It was a kit available at Three Sheep Studio on line.

When the day of chores and obligations begins to slow down, the candles are on in the windows and the shades are drawn I look for my comfy chair and a little needlework project to occupy my hands. This type of stitching is rather meditative for me. I block out the activity around me and meditate with needle and thread.

I plan to work on some cross-stitch littles during August. They are small and portable, not large and weighty like an afghan or such things. This one was started some time ago. I was really having fun making the Pears etc., then wham, burn out. So I put it away. Now I can't find the pattern. Holy Moly, we have got some creative work to do on this one! *Victoria Magazine is now offering a little box with cross stitch projects for the beginner. See....it's getting popular again.

In my head I am planning a little "primitive-style" Christmas tree. That translates as wooly hearts and stars and pears etc. I have a dear friend who gifted me her wool collection. Don't you love it when friends clean. I sure do!

My workbasket is the perfect place to "home" the small project. This is a crocheted cover from my rice filled heating pads. I have made so many of these for me, for family and friends I have lost count. Even our Lenten Fish Fry workers have them. I like the little covers for the ladies. Too Cute. I will be making more heating pads soon. I will post a mini-tutorial when I do. The most difficult part is filling the channels with rice. With the cooler weather coming I know I will use them and mine are actually threadbare. Some rice fell out yesterday when I took it from the microwave.

  • It's the little things that count. Really. Something special, a quick finish, tucked on a mantle, a basket or on a windowsill, littles charm. Comfort.
  • The month of August reminds us that Summer is special, short, to be cherished. Planning my cold weather fireside projects and kitting them up in this month is such a satisfying past time. I usually only do 2 or 3 but often I add to that for a little something extra for Halloween or Thanksgiving.
  • My heart is heavy for those I care about who are dealing with illness and infirmity.  I am reminded of just how fortunate I am.
  • FYI- the dog ate my camera case, and a shoe. This puppy stuff is hard work.
