Rock On Sewists

cutting table, with strange objects holding down pattern pieces
I love sewing gadgets and doo-dads. I collect the neatest stuff. Some of it is antique, some new. So how is it that I never graduated to pattern weights???

I am a pinner, always have been, I pin everything. A 2 inch straight seam in a stable fabric required one and sometimes two pins! Yeesh! The recent challenge over at Tilly and the Buttons got me to thinking about time. I spend a lot of time pinning. Way too much. So I considered some options. I didn't have on hand any of the traditional weights, I will check out those giant metal washers everyone likes tomorrow. But in the meantime, what to do?

Therefore, to step out of my comfort zone I considered alternative pattern weights when cutting long spaces with a rotary cutter.  Landscaping provided the answer. I stepped off the porch, grabbed some varied size river rock trying to find some pretty stones. Brought those babies to the sink and scrubbed and scrubbed. (don't tell anyone, I ran them through a cycle in the dishwasher.)   A little clunky, but guess what? They worked really well. On the table is the dreaded white T I have been moaning about forever. It is now ready to be sewn. I used a pinking blade rotary cutter. While this knit fabric will not fray, I am experimenting. I dislike show-through seams on white fabric. I will see if this will blur that demarcation line.

a bowl of rocks, what else?
