Never, Ever Forget

Please bear with me.

I intentionally do not discuss hot topics here. It is a sewing blog. However, recent comments (by likely well intentioned people)  have left me unsettled. These  persons think that we need to forget about the attacks and move on. With the passage of time, the events of that day, though remembered, seem distant, almost like a dream. It was not that, not a dream.......... it changed our lives, forever.

In our politically correct world some apparently cannot comprehend the motivation of this attack. It was Hate, pure, unadulterated, unmitigated Hate. 2,976 people died as a direct result of the attack. Countless others are suffering the after-effects of exposure to contaminants and carcinogens that will further consume their lives. Remember also all the American and non-American military who have died in the pursuit of maintaining our freedom, whether you agree or disagree with the wars, lives were lost, families were shaken.  Do not forget how important it is to remember the 9/11 attacks. Do not underestimate how much these attacks were intended to disrupt our way of life, our economy, our future.  The Hate that drove the attacks would like nothing more than to undermine our Republic via government.  As Sewists we do our little bit by making quilts for our Veterans in hospital or rehabilitation, creating panels for large display quilts to honor the lost, or stitch little gifts for children left behind. These efforts are selfless and noteworthy.

The current political climate in the US is rather over-shadowing the Anniversary Date of the events. Keep in your heart the lessons of the past while having hope for the future. The political discourse tends to use sentinel events like this as a backdrop for a photo-op or to underline or emphasize one of their talking points.

It was my intention to watch programming this week-end to remember the disaster. The loss of life, the heroics, the sacrifices. For the victims, their families and friends, the firemen and police hero's, the newscasters and camera handlers, the bystanders who witnessed the horror. I do this to honor them, to remember how I felt witnessing the news coverage and to be thankful for those I know who escaped the towers.  The Flight 93 Memorial, near me, is in progress. When I recall how brave those passengers were I am speechless.  Flight 93 Memorial

On that day I was on Cape Cod, with a Quilting Friend. We were unaware of what had happened. We heard about the first plane at a rest stop. Then the additional attacks at a quilt shop an hour or so later. We lost our desire to shop and returned to Boston, very slowly because of traffic and roadblocks.  I remember essentially every minute of those days. I am not sure if it is because I was away from home, out of my element, seeing a tour group of "foreign" men being led through Logan Airport on the day we landed. Was it them? I have no idea, I heard later that they were on one of the tour groups. I never was able to verify that. Like looking directly at the sun, a burn on my retina of time. I will Never, Ever Forget.
