Turning the calendar page from October to November is a bitter sweet ritual. Yes we do still keep a calendar with appointments, events, birthdays etc, on the back of the door that leads down to the basement. Years ago I started doing this to try to not forget where I was to be when. Then with the advent of smart phones I began to let that habit go, however, Mr. Sewtopia did not. A Flashback Post, An Antique Applique Quilt And That Quarter Inch Seam

This is a vintage hand-pieced and appliqued quilt made by a family member of mine. It was a mail-order kit via a newspaper column that shared how to quilt on a weekly basis. Newspapers, of course, were the social media of their day. Now newspapers are few and far between. I have another quilt much like this one, a different flower feature. There are a few areas where directions are still in the selvage area not totally covered by the binding. When I married into this family, sewing was my common bond with the women. Quilting Designs: Filling Patterns Design Ideas

So what is a quilter to do? I think that choosing a quilting design has turned into a quest of sorts. When reading Pathways to Better Quilting by Sally Terry, I was reminded of a set of panto-graph patterns that I purchased several years ago when I bought the original HandiQuilter frame system for a domestic machine. These simple, repetitive designs are the go-to for the home quilter. Of course, many long-arm quilters use such patterns as well. Finding the most appropriate pattern for a particular quilt requires a study of the pieced design. I think that a design with curves would work well for piecing that is essentially nothing but hard and straight lines. The first pattern, the clam shell, is much like that.
